In May 1976, the Rev. Pamela McGee was ordained in Canada for Lutheran ministry. This year the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada is commemorating twenty-five years of ordained ministry by women. This document provides information about the activities of this anniversary year.
The ELCIC convention this summer will mark the anniversary in a number of ways. Worship planners and the convention chaplain, Rev. Val Hennig, are cognizant of the commemoration and will craft worship services and prayers to mark the occasion appropriately. On Thursday noon the Women in Ministry Luncheon will remember and honor the women who have served in ordained ministry. On Thursday afternoon at 5:00 pm during a special Order of the Day, ordained women including Rev. Pamela McGee will take part in a presentation to mark the service of ordained women in the church. A convention forum on Friday afternoon will engage participants in a discussion about the "With Many Voices" study. Finally, printed materials about ordained women in the ELCIC will be prepared, displayed and distributed.
The study of ordained ministry now being prepared for presentation to the National Church Council in July. Eighty of the 125 living women who have served in ordained ministry in Canada responded to our long survey and about 25 took part in the qualitative portion by sharing with our researcher, Dr. Dianne Kieren, the joys and frustrations of daily ministry. The study report entitled "With Many Voices" is extensive and informative. After the National Church Council has received the report, it is our hope and expectation that the study report will be commended to the church for discussion, reflection and action.
The National Church Council has designated Sunday, October 21, 2001 as a day of commemoration for the ordained ministry of women in the ELCIC. The gospel text for the day is Luke 18:1-8, the parable of the persistent widow and the unjust judge. Worship and study materials will be provided from the Women's Desk at the national office for congregations and conferences to use on that day. Some activities to be considered are pulpit exchanges, prayers, discussion of the With Many Voices study, sharing circles, etc.
