Sing to the Lord a New Song

Companion Covenant

Bishop Stephen Kristenson of the Synod of Alberta and the Territories and Bishop Nehemias Parada of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colombia signed a companion covenant during the Friday afternoon session of the Convention. Bishop Kristenson noted that the people of Colombia endure extreme hardships. For example, they are second only to Sudan in number of displaced persons. The Canadian Lutheran connection with the Lutheran Church in Colombia goes back to the 1930s.

Bishop Stephen Kristenson helps Bishop Nehemias Parada into his new vest as Pastor Jose Ariza looks on. The vest was part of the symbolic gift exchange recognizing the new covenant between their two churches.

Bishop Parada addressed the convention with translation by Pastor Jose Ariza. Bishop Parada expressed his appreciation for this indication of the solidarity of Christians in Canada with his people. The convention rose in applause to acknowledge this new formal association with their brothers and sisters in Christ. Gifts were exchanged as symbolic gestures of the new covenant.

This signing means that the people of the Synod of Alberta and the Territories agree to become as well informed as possible about the people of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colombia and vice versa. This mutual knowledge will allow them to support one another in prayer. This companion relationship is part of the Companion Synod Program of ELCIC Mission in the World.
