March 1, 2004
While in Chiang Mai, Thailand last fall, I was struck by the outpouring of admiration for Lori Endress and her work as an ELCIC Short-term Missionary at Payap University which was founded in 1974 by the Church of Christ in Thailand. Lori’s students, other teachers, other missionaries, the Dean of McGilvary Seminary and the President of Payap University all encouraged the ELCIC to return Lori to Thailand after her term ends in June 2004.
Dr Boonthong Poocharoen, the President of Payap University, set aside an hour to meet with Lori and I. Later, back in Canada, I received a letter from Dr Boonthong inviting the ELCIC to renew Lori’s position as an English Teacher at Payap for an additional two years. His letter includes the following comments:
"The primary focus of Ms Endress’ continuing position will be to serve the English-language teaching needs of the students and faculty at the McGilvary Faculty of Theology and Seminary. The Seminary, in particular, has a pressing need for language support in the soon to be introduced international English-language Master of Divinity program. The McGilvary Seminary is the primary institution preparing pastors and other church workers for service in Christian communities throughout Thailand. It is no exaggeration to say that the ELCIC will be providing support that will strengthen and benefit the Thai Christian community for generations to come."
The Dean of McGilvary Seminary, Rev Bill Yoder, spoke to me about Lori’s commitment to missionary service and her ability to get along well in the culture and climate of Thailand. As a recipient of Lori’s narrative reports from Bangkok and Chiang Mai these past few years, you have had the opportunity to enjoy her insights into the lifestyle and religion of Thailand where the majority are Buddhists and Christians are a very small minority.
Mission in the World will be able to return Lori to Thailand only if there is a strong indication that the funds will come in for her support through Missionary Sponsorships. Please look through this mailing and consider Missionary Sponsorship for Lori for the next two years. You can complete and return the enclosed covenant (retain one copy for your records), send me an e-mail message or phone to let me know of your intention to support Lori’s service in Thailand.
We hope you will help make it possible for the ELCIC to continue this mission outreach in Asia.

Help Return Lori to Thailand
Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand has invited the ELCIC to renew the appointment of Lori Endress
for an additional two years. Lori’s position as English Teacher at Payap has up to now been underwritten by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. Since the United Board funding ends in June 2004, ELCIC Mission in the World is appealing for Missionary Sponsorships to make it possible to return Lori to Thailand to continue her service as an ELCIC Short-term Missionary from July 2004 to June 2006.
While any amount would help, pledges from 25 congregations of $500 for this year and $1,000 for 2005 would make it possible for Mission in the World to say "yes" to the letter of invitation from Dr Boonthong Poocharoen, President of Payap University.
