Bible Study on Mission: Luke 10:1-20

By Pastor Etienne Fomgbami, ELCIC Good News Partner

For "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved". But how are they to call one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom the have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" Romans 10: 13-15

Luke 10: 1-20 Sent out to share the Good News

Jesus is the good news sent by God to us in the world. He is the beloved Son of God. He loves us so much. He wants no one to perish but all to inherit eternal life. In the text, Jesus sends some authorized delegates for mission. What was the mission? Compare this text with Matthew 10:5-15 and 11: 20-27 where Jesus gave instructions to the 12 disciples.

  1. The mission of the seventy: 10: 1-12

What is the mission assigned to the seventy? Or what is the task appointed to the seventy? The "going from house to house" - is it an easy task? Why or why not?

Time is too precious to waste on endless social formalities. There is work to be done and a message to be made known. How would you have reacted if you have been sent?

  2. The warning to the cities: 10: 13-16

What is the warning to the cities? What will happen to those who do not repent?

God will judge those who reject the good news. Is God able to judge us today? How?

  3. The return of the seventy: 10: 17-19

What was the report of the mission? How did Jesus interpret their victory? The seventy were overjoyed at their new power. What was the sign that Satan's power is broken? "I saw Satan fall." - how do you explain this sentence? See Isaiah 14:12. The disciples were able to exorcise evil spirits. What will always happen when the gospel is preached?

  4. Rejoice you are children of God: 10:20

Why are the spirits subject to them? How did Jesus want them to rejoice? Jesus wanted greater joy for them in the certainty of eternal life (v.20). Is my name written in the book of life? If I died today, am I sure to inherit the kingdom of God? What does it mean, for me here and now that Jesus sends us out to share the good news of Jesus?

Do you know someone in your neighborhood that doesn't know who Jesus is? Have you already shared the good news of Jesus with him or her? If not, pray specially for that person now, asking that God's Spirit might lead you to talk to him or her. Write a card to that person, wishing God's grace and peace. God sent you and me to share what we receive from him. Let's go and do God's mission in Christ's name. Amen!
