From The Assembly Local Committee for The Tenth Assembly of The Lutheran World Federation

Winnipeg, November 14, 2001 (ELCIC) — Many opportunities for North American Lutherans are beginning to emerge as plans for the Tenth Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) develop. The Assembly will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, July 21 to 31, 2003, with the theme “For the Healing of the World.” People from all parts of the globe are expected to gather in Winnipeg for the event.

Plans are underway for Apostolic Visits by Assembly delegates to synods in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) before and after the Assembly. Through these visits, delegates will experience a taste of the life and mission of Lutheran churches in North America in a local setting. In turn host Lutherans will have a unique opportunity to interact with their guests by sharing in worship, prayer, biblical reflection and hands-on experiences.

As the Assembly Local Committee met in Winnipeg, on November 13, the chairpersons of the various committees began to identify hundreds of opportunities for volunteers that include such things as drivers, ushers, security staff, tour guides, hospitality personnel, communications assistants, and airport greeters. Local church members will be sought who can provide billets for volunteers from other parts of North America. Recruitment for specific volunteer opportunities is expected to begin in Spring 2002.

Plans for a variety of Assembly experiences are also being made for the many visitors who are expected to travel to Winnipeg for the Assembly. One event that is expected to attract thousands of people is a celebration on the afternoon of Sunday, July 27, 2003, at The Forks, a tourist centre at the heart of Winnipeg where people have been meeting since long before Europeans came to the continent. Choirs from Africa, Asia and Latin America are already making plans to be on hand. On the morning of the event, delegates and visitors will have the opportunity to worship in congregations throughout the Winnipeg area.

The LWF is a global communion of Christian churches in the Lutheran tradition with 133 member churches in 73 countries representing over 60.5 million of the 64.3 million Lutherans worldwide. Since the founding of the LWF in 1947 in Lund, Sweden, assemblies are normally held every six years and they serve as important milestones, giving the Federation direction and new orientation. The last LWF Assembly met in Hong Kong, China under the theme, “In Christ Called to Witness.”
