From the Office of the Bishop
and the Evangelical Lutheran Women

Winnipeg, April 16, 2002, (ELCIC) -- ELW Executive Director Ruth Vince and Rev. Cindy Halmarson, Assistant to the Bishop representing the ELCIC Women's Desk, have made the decision to cancel the May 3 to 5 retreat Opening Doors and Hearts due to insufficient registrations. The retreat had been offered to challenge participants towards a greater awareness of family violence as well as an individual and corporate Christian response.

Keynote speaker, the Honourable Margaret McCain, expressed disappointment in the cancellation of this retreat and is prepared to speak to a gathered group at another time.

Pam Radunsky, ELW Vice-President and the ELCIC representative on the board of Church Council on Justice and Corrections, said, "I'm so sorry to hear about this. I'm also surprised, I thought there would be standing room only."

ELW and the ELCIC will strive to look at other ways of responding to the World Council of Churches Decade to Overcome Violence endorsed by both groups. A congregation, conference or synod group that would be willing to assist with the hosting of a similar event in the future is invited to contact either Cindy Halmarson or Ruth Vince.
