From Global Hunger and Development Appeal (GHDA)
Winnipeg, January 5, 2004 (ELCIC) --The ELCIC’s Global Hunger and Development Appeal (GHDA) welcomes contributions to help victims of the recent earthquake in Bam, Iran.
More than 30,000 people died following the Dec. 26 earthquake which destroyed much of the city. Aid workers put the number of homeless at more than100,000. Few buildings remain habitable and most have collapsed into piles of bricks.
International humanitarian organizations are responding to the urgent needs of survivors in and around Bam. Donations to GHDA will be forwarded through Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR ) to Action by Churches Together (ACT) partners operating in Iran. (CLWR is a member of ACT)
Donations will support the emergency distribution of food and non-food items; an emergency water supply; emergency shelter; and psycho-social assistance. One partner, the Middle East Council of Churches, specifically is providing survivors with tents, blankets, 20 water tanks of 50 litres each, food and cooking oil.
ACT staff is in conversation with the Middle East Council of Churches about mobilizing additional staff who would oversee planning and execution of assessments, logistics and delivery of materials.
ELCIC members can help victims of the earthquake in Bam by making a second mile donation to GHDA.
