A NEWS RELEASE
From National Office of the ELCIC
Winnipeg, September 28, 2004 (ELCIC)--Representatives of Camrose Lutheran College Corporation, the University of Alberta (UofA) and the province of Alberta met at Augustana College on Sunday, September 12, 2004 for a Celebration of Unity.
Augustana University College is now formally known as the Augustana Faculty of the University of Alberta.
Besides assuming the school's debts and balancing its budget, UofA has agreed to retain Augustana's cultural and religious heritage. The Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion in Public Life as well as a portion of a teaching chaplain's salary will be provided by UofA so that these unique aspects of the school can continue.
A small, permanent display in the Administration Building will honour the college's Norwegian cultural heritage.
The Camrose Lutheran College Corporation has not been dissolved, but will remain in existence as a means of support for the Centre and the chaplaincy program. It retains the right to receive funds and distribute them for its constituted purposes.
The ceremony was chaired by Dr. Roger Epp, Acting Dean of the Augustana Faculty and saw greetings brought by representatives of the College Corporation, the ELCIC, the University of Alberta and the Government of Alberta.
National Bishop Raymond Schultz attended, representing the ELCIC. "This was an important expression of support from the University of Alberta regarding the cultural and religious heritage of Augustana," says Bishop Schultz. "They have guaranteed us an opportunity to serve the university with gifts that belong uniquely to the Lutheran Church."
