A NEWS RELEASE
From Global Hunger and Development Appeal (GHDA)
Winnipeg, January 5, 2005 (ELCIC)--On December 31, 2004, CLWR announced that Lutheran Life Insurance Society of Canada has donated $15,000 to Canadian Lutheran World Relief’s Asia tsunami appeal.
Dr. Dieter Kays, Lutheran Life's President, said on December 29 that $30,000 would be divided immediately between Canadian Lutheran World Relief and World Vision to support their efforts to help the victims. An additional $30,000 will be earmarked to match funds raised by Lutheran Life's volunteer member branches throughout Canada.
"We are deeply grateful for this gift from Lutheran Life," said Ruth Jensen, executive director of CLWR. "It’s been humbling to have so many individuals and groups respond to the disaster unfolding in Asia."
Dr. Kays said "We are stunned by the degree of devastation that is being reported and our hearts go out to the people of these lands, and to the families and friends they have in this country.
"As a fraternal insurance society we want to do what we can to assist in this essential, massive recovery effort. Part of our mandate is to support families, particularly in crisis situations...and while our operations are Canadian-based, it's natural that we would want to reach out to help others across the globe."
He indicated Lutheran Life is contacting the more than 650 leaders of its volunteer branch organizations across Canada to inform them of their Society's initial action and to encourage branch members -- and the Christian congregations and institutions where they operate -- to participate in the matching grant program.
The fraternal Society's disaster relief program, which will be available immediately, will match funds raised by the organization's branches to the maximum fund allocation of $30,000.
