A NEWS RELEASE
From National Office of the ELCIC
Winnipeg, January 13, 2005 (ELCIC)-- The task force for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Studies on Sexuality was created at the direction of the ELCA Church Council to fulfill resolutions adopted by the 2001 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.
Its first responsibility was to aid the ELCA in a study of human sexuality, including homosexuality. The task force prepared two studies, Journey Together Faithfully, Part One and Part Two. More than 100,000 copies of Part Two were distributed or purchased and additional copies were downloaded from the Web. (These documents are still available on this site, www.elca.org/faithfuljourney) The studies invited responses and more than 28,000 were received, read, and summarized.
The Church Council also directed the task force to prepare a report for the 2005 ELCA Churchwide Assembly and to include recommendations concerning the blessing of committed same-gender relationships and the ordination, consecration, and commissioning of people in such relationships.
Having listened carefully to the insights of ELCA members and completed its own studies, the task force report with recommendations for the church’s consideration and action were made public today. In it are three main recommendations and supporting arguments.
