A NEWS RELEASE
From the National Office of Evangelical Lutheran Women Inc. (ELW)
Winnipeg, July 6, 2005 (ELCIC) -- Evangelical Lutheran Women Inc. (ELW) is pleased to announce the publication of an exciting new English as a Second Language (ESL) Bible study.
For the past 20 years ELW has produced the only theologically reviewed Bible study in the ELCIC. These studies have been used extensively throughout the ELCIC and have played an important role in the theological formation of women throughout the church. While consistent with Lutheran theology, these studies are available for use across denominations and are based on the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.
In 2006, through our partnership with the ELCIC, ELW will now be extending this ministry into the world. The 2006 ELW theme is "Walking by Faith as Leaders and Mentors." As the church reaches out to people in a changing global context, leaders and mentors are being identified and nurtured in partner communities here in Canada and worldwide. Bible study has been and will continue to be a significant part of mission work wherever it is done. Until now, however, sharing the Good News in the form of structured Bible study has been met with challenges for people working in two or more languages.
The nine-session 2006 Bible Study, "Show us the Way: Walking by Faith as Leaders and Mentors" (written by Nancy Vernon Kelly, ELCIC pastor) has been edited for plain language and 18 ESL worksheets have been carefully designed by an experienced ESL instructor and ELCIC Bible study leader. These worksheets support the objectives of the Bible study while recognizing and supporting ESL challenges and goals in this area.
