Winnipeg, 16 March 2007--The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC)'s National Church Council (NCC) is meeting in Winnipeg from March 15-17. The following is an overview of highlights from the first day of meetings:
The March meeting of NCC commenced with Opening Worship Service at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at St. Benedict’s Retreat Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. NCC members were joined by staff and board members of Evangelical Lutheran Women (ELW).
National Bishop Raymond Schultz delivered the sermon at Opening Worship. ELCIC staff members Ryan Andersen, Assistant to the Bishop for Stewardship in Public Life, and the Rev. Paul Gehrs, Assistant to the Bishop for Synodical Relations, and ELCIC and Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) joint staff member Deaconess Monica Denk, International Volunteer Coordinator, were installed into their positions during the worship service.
The business session of NCC commenced at 8:00 p.m.; ELW board and staff members were present. National Bishop Schultz formally welcomed Executive Director Ruth Vince and the ELW board members.
Ruth Vince gave a report on ELW. A preview of the new ELW resource, “What’s Enough?”, a program about our relationship with money and the role of faith within that relationship was introduced. This creative and engaging resource was the result of a partnership between the ELW and Lutheran Planned Giving (LPG).
Special guests in attendance were formally introduced.
The business session was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
