Compassionate Justice and Public Policy

Seeking to live as a church In Mission for Others, one element of the ELCIC’s work is to "study issues in contemporary society in the light of the Word of God and respond publicly to social and moral issues as an advocate for justice and as an agent for reconciliation." (ELCIC Constitution, Art. IV, Sect. 2f.)

The National Church Council has named “Compassionate Justice” as one of the four key priorities for the ELCIC for the years 2013-2017, and has identified the following primary areas of focus:

  • Challenge the causes and respond to the consequences of injustice through effective partnership with Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR)

  • Continue to pursue right relationships with Indigenous people

  • Promote responsible resource extraction

  • Address issues of homelessness and affordable housing

  • Continue and increase stewardship of creation initiatives

  • Support and work for justice and peace in the Holy Land

  • Address issues of injustice as identified in the Social Statement on Human Sexuality

Recognizing the matters of justice and reconciliation are long-term challenges that will require time, patience, persistence, and commitment on our part, the ELCIC works in effective partnership with other churches and organizations show love and care for God’s people and God’s world. One way the ELCIC offers a public witness is through social statements, resolutions, and study papers.
