National Church Council has designated October 6, 2002 as Youth Ministry Sunday. The following suggestions for use on Youth Ministry Sunday presuppose a normal eucharistic service order is used. The suggestions may be used with a Service of the Word if needed. Elements suggested from the orders of worship at the Cry Out Youth gathering are substituted at the appropriate points in the order. Therefore, these suggestions may be used with the Lutheran Book of Worship or With One Voice or other local parochial musical settings of the Holy Communion liturgy.
Rehearsing and involving the youth of the parish in the liturgy as assisting ministers, readers, prayer leaders, acolytes, ushers and cantors is desirable and possible, not merely for this youth emphasis Sunday but for all Sundays as they participate actively in the life of the church.
Congregations are encouraged to invite youth to share their experience of the youth gathering Cry Out (http://youth.elcic.ca/cryout) and/or their understanding of Youth Ministry. Some program areas of youth ministry are the Canadian Lutheran Youth Gathering, The National Youth Project 2002-2004 Offering Peace—a program toward ending violence and the youth web site Deeper (http://youth.elcic.ca). Ask your youth about other ministries.
If your congregation does not have youth that have attended the gathering, an option might be to invite youth from another congregation to participate in leadership with you.
