Spread the Word

When you share your stories of faith and service, you help us keep the church-wide momentum going.

My goal as incoming editor just one short year ago was to share and celebrate church "successes." The people, the programs, the ideas, the strengthening grace and sense of mission that leads us into creative and meaningful ministries—and the resulting dialogue. I had lots of ideas about how I wanted to change Canada Lutheran to make it more accessible and relevant to our lay readers. What I didn't expect: how much the magazine would change me.

Eight times a year, articles roll in from my freelance writers and synod editors, and I get to read and absorb them just as you do. I've been changed by what I've read, by the stories you ve told and the ideas authors have presented. And as a result, I do things and see things differently than I did just one year ago.

I pray more, at different times, and for different things than I did before. I approach strangers and even familiar, tired relationships with a more open heart. I, along with my family, have a renewed desire to become more active in our church community, and we have become more intentional in our giving of both time and resources. My interest in world affairs has intensified as I see the results of poverty, injustice, and war first-hand through the eyes and outreach of our incredible missionaries. These may sound like baby steps, but for me, it amounts to a whole lot of meaningful change.

Here at home, it's hard not to be moved by the creative examples of ministry carried out by congregations of every size and location. Whether you read this issue's cover story about savvy stewardship or you take in the news from each of the five synods, I hope you'll feel encouraged by what a small church committee or even one or two individuals can accomplish armed with God's mission, gifts, and guidance.

The articles in the following pages are your stories, and in sharing them, we keep the positive momentum going within the church and our communities. So I encourage you not only to read what your brothers and sisters in faith are doing across the country, but to write us and share more of your own efforts, successes, ideas, and letters to the editor so that others may see the possibilities and be inspired to follow in your footsteps. I know I am.

Write away!

Do you have an inspiring story of faith to share? See how you or your congregation can be featured in an upcoming issue of Canada Lutheran.

We are looking for:

1. Young Lutherans making a difference in their communities.

2. Readers who have overcome personal challenges (infertility, grief, addiction, and so on) through faith.

3. Congregations that excel in youth ministry, community organizing, evangelism, mission work, or other areas of ministry.

4. Progressive congregations that are using creativity and innovation to meet today's unique challenges.

Please submit story ideas directly to your synod editor. (For contact information, refer to the appropriate synod section.)

For letters to the editor, email editor@elcic.ca or write (in 300 words or less) to: Canada Lutheran, 302–393 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 3H6.
