Winnipeg, January 26, 2005 (ELCIC)--On January 18th, ELCIC Volunteers in Mission Rev. Jack and Valerie Frederick read in their newspaper, Guyana's Stabroek News, “With record floods swamping thousands of households along the coast the government yesterday scrambled to provide essential services and shelter to those affected. But President Bharrat Jagdeo, who is leading the response, warns that more rain is on the way...”

But Jack and Valerie really didn’t need the newspaper. Emails from the Fredericks since Jan 18th describe conditions. “Our days have been like living on an island - surrounded by flooding waters. Oh Noah – build us an ark... Our fourth flooding in less than three weeks – the water was up to the entrance landing into church & still raining …two flood conditions in as many days. Georgetown is in a state of emergency. The rains are ongoing with no let up in sight!..Yesterday set us at record high levels with an all day tropical storm – storm clouds closing in again... the garage is totally floating… Getting [drinking] water in from the road truck drop off is difficult. Jack off to find a store – supplies are becoming scarce, shelves emptying.”

Overall there are some 200,000 plus persons in Guyana affected by the floods with one third of this number being seriously affected.

GHDA Coordinator, Rev. Paul Johnson, has directed the release of $5000 from the GHDA Disaster Fund. These funds will be forwarded directly to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guyana (ELCG) for distribution where needed most. ELCIC members are invited to donate to 'GHDA-Guyana Flooding'.

Rev. Roy Thakurdyal, President of the ELCG, welcomes any assistance that the ELCIC can offer through the Global Hunger and Development Appeal. The ELCG is a member of the Lutheran World Federation, one of eight partner churches of the ELCIC, and a Companion Synod to the Eastern Synod-ELCIC.

Rev. Jack and Valerie Frederick are currently serving as ELCIC Volunteers-in-Mission in Georgetown, Guyana. Jack is pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Parish there and Valerie assists with church programs.

You can send a financial gift to aid in this disaster response through the ELCIC by making your cheque out to GHDA and marking it "Guyana Flooding". Add this to your regular GHDA gifts in your church offering; mail it to GHDA at the address below, or donate on-line at //elcic.ca/ghda .
