Statement from National, MNO Synod Leaders

Following the announcement from the Manitoba Government of the discovery of potential human remains at the Prairie Green Landfill site, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) National Bishop Susan Johnson and Manitoba/Northwestern Ontario (MNO) Synod Bishop Jason Zinko have issued a statement calling for prayers, and to continue the call for justice for all MMIWG2S people.

We join with many in praying for the families of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran as they wait for the confirmation and identification of the human remains.

We give thanks to the families of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, and the many people in our communities who have been steadfast in their advocacy for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit (MMIWG2S) people. Their unwavering dedication has been instrumental in urging the government to take action on this search.

We continue to call for justice for all MMIWG2S people. And continue to hold them in prayer, as well as their families and all who love them.

Rev. Susan Johnson, National Bishop, ELCIC
Rev. Jason Zinko, Bishop of the Manitoba/Northwestern Ontario Synod

The two leaders participated in an ecumenical delegation that visited Camp Morgan in September 2023. They heard first-hand from the families of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran and remain committed to reconciliation and racial justice.
