ELCIC Congregational Insurance Information Session
The ELCIC National Office hosted two webinar sessions to assist individuals responsible for congregational insurance. A recording of the 1st webinar is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfyRSHlXWC0
There were two questions that were followed up on after the insurance webinars, they are as follows:
- There was a question about churches and workers compensation. Are they exempt? Is this different province to province? And a request for further information on what to do if congregations / employees did not have WC coverage (i.e. recommend Death and Dismemberment policy insurance). Response from AON: The legislation does vary by jurisdiction. Short answer would be does ELCIC or the regional Synods pay into workers compensation for ministers? Office staff would likely have to be covered by law, however there is are religious exemptions. This question might be best put to the Synod treasures as they should be able to see if employees are entered in to WCB.
- There was a question about wine at events – i.e. one congregation has a lunch before Good Friday with wine. Is this okay? Does this have to be disclosed to the insurer each time they have alcohol at an event? AON: Short answer is this should be ok. If a church is renting out their space then that’s a different matter. If, say a church rents a space out for an event where alcohol is being sold then a seperate policy would be placed. Usually in that case the event holder would be ultimately responsible, even if the church placed a policy it would only cover off the churches liability and not cover the liability of the event holder.
COVID Resources
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen things change significantly – sometimes on a daily basis – impacting our everyday lives, both within and outside of our congregations. National and Synod Treasurers have put together the following resources to assist congregational treasurers and leaders.
